Ogle Mill

Upstream: US 64 Bridge

Up Sandy Creek: Trogden Mill

78-5 Ogle Mill

Downstream: Columbia Manf (Ramseur)

Hercules Ogle Mill is shown here and dated 1761 on the Randolph Historical Map, although no evidence of a former mill can be seen on aerial photos. The site must now be under the backwaters of the dam in Ramseur.

Hercules Ogle (aka Argulus Ogle) began a private condemnation proceeding against Lord Granville (who owned the opposite bank) to get land for building a mill dam on the Deep (Orange Ct Min Jul 1759). A land grant from Earl Granville to "Harculus" Ogle on September 21, 1761 “on the south side of Deep River, opposite Sandy Creek.” The grant says that this land “includes his improvement.” Based upon these two documents, I think the Ogle Mill site was a bit upstream of the Ramseur dam, but perhaps some deed research in Randolph County would reveal the answer to that question.
